Due to many requests, here is my story around my struggle and then success with milk supply. When my little girl was very little, she was not handling foods that I tried to introduce into her diet well; so I felt I would have to nurse much longer than I might have needed to with the older two; simply for nutritional reasons. One day around a year my milk supply plummeted. I was terrified because there were maybe 3 foods she was tolerating outside my milk. I did a little digging.
By far what helped the most was rubbing therapeutic grade Fennel essential oil on my chest night and morning. This doubled my milk in less than 2 days. Each day I used it my milk supply would increase exponentially. I ended up only needing the fennel oil for 4 days. Then to keep things flowing, I used the cookies below, with just an occasional use of the fennel for extra support when I needed it.
As I searched I also found "lactation cookies".... these are the coolest cookies ever! They are paleo, keto, gluten free, sugar free, and they have super-food nutrition. This boost of specific nutrients helps many women with milk supply, no matter the age of the baby. This was also the first cookie my sweet little girl could handle without an allergic reaction.
This recipe is slightly different from other lactation cookies you will find. Even though I found many versions of lactation cookies, they all had grains added, which my little one wasn't tolerating without belly aches and rashes at the time. I wanted to make them in a way that both she and I could enjoy them together. I ended up just using the recipes I found as inspiration for my own paleo version that I ended up creating with a bit of experimentation. This is still the paleo cookie recipe my family enjoys today and her sensitive little belly handled them great as one of her first foods that worked!
Paleo Lactation Cookies Recipe (paleo, gluten free, sugar free)
Wet Ingredients:
1 cup butter
3/4 cup maple syrup
4 Tablespoons water
2 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Dry Ingredients:
3 cups ground flaxseed
2 cups coconut flakes
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup raisins
2 Tablespoons brewer's nutritional yeast
Directions:
Blend all the wet ingredients, starting with the softened butter and maple syrup. Then add in the other wet ingredients until fully blended. In a separate mixing bowl combine the dry ingredients. Now mix all wet ingredients with all dry ingredients. After the batter is thoroughly mixed, spoon cookies onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 8-12 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. This recipe can make up to 12 dozen depending on cookie size.
When I was trying to keep up my milk supply I would make this big batch, even though it makes so many cookies, so that I could have enough batter to refrigerate or freeze till the next day when I would need to make them again. I ate these every day for a while. The taste was odd at first, but good... then after getting used to it I really liked them. The kids loved them from the get-go though and it was fun to have a healthy treat for my sweet tooth every day. Especially since the healthy treat was solving so many concerns for us at the time. I hope you are able to find as much value from these super nutritious cookies as my family did! Enjoy!
